Explain to me why I can put away a sewing machine in excellent working order, and then when I pull it out again it insists that the tension is wrong wrong wrong.

In my experience, it is the act of attempting to fix it that solves the problem. It's a sort of propitiation of the sewing gods. Nothing actually gets fixed, the swing machine just forgives you.

I wonder if they would like being put away a little loose and tightened up for use, like musical instruments

@clew I suspect if I told my sewing machine that, it would be complimented to think that it is a musical instrument of sorts. Maybe an accordion.

Expressive siblings of the industrial age, yes? The sewing machine, the accordion, the typewriter

I wonder if the storage area is a different temperature from where you use it, and it needs some time to acclimate. Maybe the change in size from the different temperature is noticeable?

@alienghic Interesting idea, but it is stored in a cabinet in my living room where I use it.
No, it's something wrong with the threading, as usual, and I have to hunt down the manual. They are simple creatures, sewing machines, but recalcitrant.
