@acm_redfox Sometimes (usually, even) things are what they seem to be.

Though the inter-arrival rate of Ford assassination attempts remains undefeated.

@mattblaze yeah, but he hasn’t been run over by my grandmother on skis, so he’s still lamer than Ford.

For the kids who weren't around then: in 1975 there were two serious but failed attempts on President Gerald Ford's life, just 17 days apart from each other. In both cases, the would-be assassins - one a member of the Manson family - didn't appear to have specific grievances against Ford himself, but rather thought that killing the president would bring about some sort of positive social change.

So Ford holds the record for shortest interval between assassination attempts. But Trump and Reagan almost certainly hold the record for presidential assassination attempts in closest geographic proximity to one another.

I mean, shortest so far. We don't know what the future holds.

Which is interesting because Ford actually ended up getting eaten by wolves. He was delicious.

Trump has the most entries in the "assassination attempts and plots" on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_assassination_attempts_and_plots#Donald_Trump_2

@mattblaze Is it weird that part of me wonders about known vs. unknown assassination attempts? Like, I can't but think about how many plots there were against various presidents that were foiled by different law enforcement/alphabet soup agencies and which the public will never learn about.

There probably aren't many, if any. But how would we know?

@mattblaze This comment led me to the Wikipedia page on assassination attempts of your presidents and there appear to be many foiled attempts I have never heard of, even on recent presidents. Apart from the last screw up, the CIA seems to be doing a pretty good job.

@mattblaze The thing I don’t understand is why they think killing Trump will make things better - my understanding of history is that it would actually energize his supporters and turn Vance into a “torch bearer”.

You could make a solid argument that if Kennedy hadn’t been assassinated there would have been no Great Society or Apollo program.
