With all the tiktok drama I have been telling people Mastodon is still here and kicking!! I love this app and I really think the decentralized model is the best for social media.

Still, people don’t want to join! What do you think Mastodon’s biggest barriers are to courting new users? What could be done to improve the product and grow the user base in a positive way?

@taylorlorenz @noodlemaz people are inherently lazy or too busy to find people to follow. Algorithms spoiled the experience by automating it.

@morgan @taylorlorenz some instances forbid sales, and many people just don't want to be advertised to.

@MamaLake @morgan @taylorlorenz Some businesses can get real spammy. I see the turnoff.

If there were a commercial designated account type, there could be an option to mute them wholesale or disable them in an instance. You'd know who allowed business and who didn't, at least.

Like it or not, business access (particularly for small and micro) is important and supportive to the overall social ecosystem.

@marymessall @taylorlorenz Following hashtags really should be packaged as less technical and more fun. As in, "here are some keywords, tap the ones that interest you!" and then automate that so that they're following those hashtags.

Also, for the love of GOD, make it so I can follow a hashtag in a list. I *need* an exclusive #Linux feed to escape the world.

@OrionKidder @marymessall @taylorlorenz this is the most underrated feature on mastodon and the key to opening up your feed right away to discover new people.

@davidbcohen @LaChasseuse @taylorlorenz @davidallengreen Purists duly blocked. It’s such a counter productive mentality. Ontop of that, as the fedi is tiny, if you want to reach a wider audience some compromise is necessary with the established platforms. Which vary in their levels of evil.

@taylorlorenz There is also the problem of retaining people. @davidallengreen, a UK lawyer with solid takes on pretty much everything, just went on an extended fedi break because the purity police didn’t like him using substack and he got bored of the hassling. Lovely own goal reply guys, the only behaviour you changed was his posting on the fedi. This is a people issue not a tech issue, which I’m not quite sure how to get around. He’s not the only one either.

                    @Phosphenes @bovaz @aurochs

The fedi is slowly becoming a NORC (naturally occurring retirement community)

Only facebook has an older userbase.

And being more old than young that isn't a personal problem. But I wish there was more interest in making it a place younger people would care about. And that would mean listening to them.

@futurebird @Phosphenes @bovaz @aurochs If Loops and Pixelfed can manage to look and feel enough like Instagram while successfully being FOSS through and through it'll be a big deal. I'm really hoping we can all throw in together on that working but I know the politics of FOSS projects can be just as confusing and counterproductive as those in corporateland.

@hfinyow @taylorlorenz what if someone created a step-by-step choice menu followed by some more stuff?

                      E.g.
                      Are you interested in
                      *Safety
                      *Hobby
                      *Lifestyle

And split a few times from there.

@hiphopheaven @futurebird @Phosphenes @bovaz @aurochs They do! I left Tik Tok and Instagram a few years ago after I joined the Fediverse, and I was excited to find Loops and Pixelfed.

Naturally it sucks not having a lot of people you know "IRL" on those, since that was a major reason to use Instagram - to keep up with lots of friends through their posts and short video updates.

It seemed that was the only issue - getting more people to join the platform. But that is no easy task...

@hiphopheaven The important thing about Instagram for me was the people and being able to keep up with them through that interface.

There are lots of aspects to these things. Just personally liked being able to keep up with people I knew through that. I'd loe to have a FOSS replacement for that, so I want Pixelfed and Loops to work well so I can suggest friends install them.

@taylorlorenz I think major independent journalists need to essentially join forces and manage an independent Mastodon instance.

Most users are terribly risk averse, but news seekers are desperate for a tool where they can get news and information w/out an algo.

People like you, Mehdi Hasan (etc.) could create the critical mass for it to work.

Create a non-profit, govern it with a board, charge other journalists nominal membership fees to manage it and keep it running.

@taylorlorenz I don't think many servers are courting users. "If you built it they, will come" hasn't worked that well for the #fediverse

We should learn from the rapid growth of the #forkiverse server, which was due to courting new users via a joint podcast.

@matt The demographics of the current fediverse are pretty homogeneous. Some people like it that way and some don't. For those who don't, rapid growth can help change that

@taylorlorenz honestly? The chance of becoming a famous and/or wealthy internet influencer is much lower here. I think that is a big deterrent for people, whether they're willing to admit it or not.

As for what can be done about that? Nothing, really, because I think that's what makes it so appealing to the rest of us.

@brandonscript @taylorlorenz Yeah, this is a good point

the antiviral design of mastodon is really super weird for people accustomed to the way most corporate social media is designed
