Mastodon is great, but it isn't meant to replicate everything.

Loops has a vibrant community that is quite different than microblogging focused counterparts.

I believe that Loops will thrive and bring a whole new cohort of people to the fediverse because of this specific format.

@dansup the only way to to do this is seed a pile of things and see what sticks. Some won’t. These are beginnings.

@dansup Indeed. I think you have to be mindful of the culture of different types of apps. If I browse just images on Mastodon I'm going to get a lot of screenshots, graphs and other stuff that nobody going to a photo sharing app is really interested in seeing. Same thing happens with videos.

The key is to let the different apps have their own body of content and use federation to supplement that with the accounts that specifically want to take part in that kind of community from Mastodon etc.

@dansup There's nothing more to that quoted toot than "This new thing isn't the same as the thing I like, so therefore it must be bad".

          One man's boring is another man's reason-I-came-to-the-fediverse.

@Quicky @dansup Maybe I did not get my point across. I have to start from scratch on a completely new platform with zero followers and friends. There is no way to discover people from the existing social graph that I built on Mastodon, although both platforms are on the Fediverse. That did not work with Pixelfed for me and I doubt it will work with video content. Things need to be integrated, not just use the same technology stack.

@raimue @dansup Fair enough, but "boring" Pixelfed is currently celebrating 1m users - a huge number in Fediverse terms - and which I'd argue is significant traction. If Loops comes anywhere close to that, it will be a success.

It's worth pointing out that some of us discovered the Fediverse through Pixelfed - it's what brought us here. We didn't adopt Mastodon first then complain that Pixelfed wasn't equivalent. We found Pixelfed, then explored the Fediverse. I expect Loops to do the same.
