Holy Cow! For once, this SCOTUS upholds the law.
"Delivering a major blow to Trump, the Supreme Court on Friday ruled that he exceeded his authority when imposing sweeping tariffs using a law reserved for a national emergency.
The justices, divided 6-3, held that Trump's aggressive approach to tariffs on products entering the U.S. from across the world was not permitted under a 1977 law called the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA)."

The SCOTUS majority Opinion on trump's claim to impose tariffs.
"Based on two words separated by 16 others in Section 1702(a)(1)(B) of IEEPA—“regulate” and importation”—the President asserts the independent power to impose tariffs on imports from any country, of any product, at any rate, for any amount of time. Those words cannot bear such weight."
"The Framers gave Congress “alone . . . access to the pockets of the people.”

Excellent point by legal journalist Cristian Farias -
"Kudos to Rick Woldenberg, the Chicago-area leader of Learning Resources, an educational toy company that had the courage to sue the president of the United States to save his family business. As well as everyone else who stepped up."

The 3 dissenters were Thomas, Alito, and Cavanaugh.
But you could probably have guessed that.

@weekend_editor
Thomas, Alito, and Cavanaugh are probably the only judges in the entire country that disagree with the SCOTUS ruling. -

Expect the trump team including Kevin Hassett to actually keep bleating something along these lines

Just a note: I Follow economist Justin Wolfers quite closely and he is excellent
Note here that he is *quoting* '-- The NY Fed*' (possibly facetiously) without putting quote marks around the text of the quote itself
Just so there's no confusion or misreading...

Trump today after the SCOTUS ruling on tariffs -
“Effective immediately, all national security tariffs under Section 232 and all existing Section 301 tariffs... remain fully in place and in full force and effect.
“I will sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff under Section 122, over & above our normal tariffs already being charged.”
More punishment for American consumers and importers, because Daddy is upset?
What can SCOTUS do to stop him?

@AkaSci He really forces the question about why we have such a hard time getting rid of awful leaders when others don’t? And also Republicans clearly can’t be trusted with anything ever again. Even those who whisper frustrations within the party are just cowardly and complicit.

@AkaSci The worst part is this isn't the first time we have had this problem. Andrew Jackson exploited it first.

@StephanieMoore @AkaSci The American challenge with removing leaders is largely about 2 things
- only two parties
- a presidential system where removal is punitive (impeachment requiring a "conviction" supported by a super e-majority) instead of simply a normal reflection of a loss of confidence. You want to fix it, you need to reform both those things.

Is it apocryphal that the founders of the experimental republic added provision for impeachment because it was kinder than assassination? -

also, the US Lobby system is basically just legalised corruption, banned in most western countries

The punitive action available to the Senate is removal from office and a bar against returning to office. They don't get to impose prison sentences. That's for the courts. -

trump announces (on social media) 10% global tariff on all countries.
Not clear what happens to tariffs declared illegal by SCOTUS today.
This is under Section 122 of the 1974 act.
Section 122 tariffs are -
- restricted for up to only 150 days
- are limited to 15% of a product’s estimated value
- must also be non-discriminatory,' i.e. one tariff rate for everyone,Congress can approve an extension beyond 150 days.
