@AkaSci He really forces the question about why we have such a hard time getting rid of awful leaders when others don’t? And also Republicans clearly can’t be trusted with anything ever again. Even those who whisper frustrations within the party are just cowardly and complicit.

@StephanieMoore @AkaSci The American challenge with removing leaders is largely about 2 things

    - only two parties
    - a presidential system where removal is punitive (impeachment requiring a "conviction" supported by a super e-majority) instead of simply a normal reflection of a loss of confidence.

You want to fix it, you need to reform both those things.

Is it apocryphal that the founders of the experimental republic added provision for impeachment because it was kinder than assassination?

Trump today after the SCOTUS ruling on tariffs -

“Effective immediately, all national security tariffs under Section 232 and all existing Section 301 tariffs... remain fully in place and in full force and effect.

“I will sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff under Section 122, over & above our normal tariffs already being charged.”

More punishment for American consumers and importers, because Daddy is upset?

What can SCOTUS do to stop him?

One tariff is only a temporary tariff that can be imposed for 3 or six months, and the other needs a congressional investigation and finding.

Trump is bloviating, he's lost his toys.

Angry he lost so big, he's screaming he's more powerful.

                Trump lost big.

The punitive action available to the Senate is removal from office and a bar against returning to office. They don't get to impose prison sentences. That's for the courts.

trump announces (on social media) 10% global tariff on all countries.

Not clear what happens to tariffs declared illegal by SCOTUS today.

This is under Section 122 of the 1974 act.

                    Section 122 tariffs are -
                    - restricted for up to only 150 days
                    - are limited to 15% of a product’s estimated value
                    - must also be non-discriminatory,' i.e. one tariff rate for everyone,

Congress can approve an extension beyond 150 days.

The White House website refers to the 10% global tariff under section 122 as a "temporary import duty."

It also contains a laundry list of items that will be exempt from this new tariff.

10% duty shall apply to all shipments made via the postal system, no matter how small in value.

I would guess that these proclamations and Executive Orders were prepared days in advance by the White House lawyers.

The punitive action available to the Senate is removal from office and a bar against returning to office. They don't get to impose prison sentences. That's for the courts.

@bruce @StephanieMoore @AkaSci I realize, but there's a big difference in process between a supermajority voting "we think you've done something very wrong" and a simple majority voting "we don't think you're the right leader for this moment."
