My best friend got back this week from a giant 6-month trip to something like 17 countries, a "family gap year" with her husband and their daughter who just graduated high school. And they're having us over for dinner tomorrow, and I asked (as is my custom) if I can bring dessert. And there are lots of considerations, but I've decided that, as I am in one sense welcoming them back to the US, I should make an apple pie.
