La legge approvata dalla Knesset, il Parlamento israeliano, che istituisce la pena di morte per i terroristi, di fatto concepita per colpire i palestinesi, costituisce un “chiaro passo indietro” da parte dello Stato ebraico e si aggiunge al “trend negativo riguardo al rispetto dei diritti umani” in Israele. Lo ha detto il portavoce dell’Ue per gli Affari Esteri Anouar el Anouni, rispondendo ad una domanda a Bruxelles durante il briefing con la stampa. Il portavoce non ha risposto alla domanda se l’Ue abbia intenzione di sospendere l’accordo di associazione con Israele, che prevede il rispetto dei diritti umani, perché tra gli Stati membri dell’Ue su questo non c’è accordo, quindi l’Ue non può sospenderlo. La legge, per l’Ue, è “molto preoccupante”, sia perché istituisce la pena di morte, alla quale l’Ue è “contraria in ogni caso” perché viola “il diritto alla vita”, sia per la sua “natura discriminatoria”. C’è anche, nota infine el Anouni, “un ricorso alla Corte Suprema” contro la legge approvata dalla Knesset.

The law passed by the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, which establishes the death penalty for terrorists, was essentially designed to target Palestinians, constituting a “clear step back” by the Israeli State and adding to the “negative trend regarding respect for human rights” in Israel. This was stated by the EU’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Anouar el Anouni, responding to a question in Brussels during the press briefing. The spokesperson did not answer the question of whether the EU intended to suspend the Association Agreement with Israel, which includes respect for human rights, because there is no agreement among EU member states on this, so the EU cannot suspend it. The law is “very worrying,” according to the EU, both because it establishes the death penalty, to which the EU is “opposed in any case” because it violates “the right to life,” and for its “discriminatory nature.” There is also, notes el Anouni, “a recourse to the Supreme Court” against the law passed by the Knesset.
