I believe, this will continue until Canada, the UK, and the EU introduces a musketeer oath (one for all), so when Trump hits one of us with tariffs, we all hit back with the exact same tariffs.
If Trump knew, that his 25 percent car tariffs would immediately result in the same tariffs on US car exports to Canada, UK, and EU, he would not even try.
You don't hit back cars' for cars' tariff when Europe doesn't buy US cars for plenty of other reasons (gas guzzlers too big for comfort) anyhow.
You hit back with tariffs where it hurts. Republicans got that lessons almost every legislature period, when they hurt EU economy for no good reason.

@martinvermeer @ij @randahl There are propably quite many such differences in worldview, that makes it a long process to include the USA. But maybe just some of the states?
@Inidox @ij @randahl That would require the US to fall apart. That's pretty big compared to one constitutional amendment.
I think we need to internalize that the EU is not just an economic etc. zone, but a commonwealth of values. The Second Amendment is incompatible with that, given its roots in slavery and slave patrols - and as a side note, the pretextual justification that it allows Americans to stand up to tyrants, has shown itself to be wildly silly in a country that voluntarily elected twice the same would-be tyrant...
Same applies for the clause in the 13th Amendment allowing slavery inside prisons. It must all go before America can be whole, and, if we are holding the cards, we must insist.

@martinvermeer @Inidox @ij @randahl ... And they'll need to abolish the death penalty. And student loans. And medical debt.

@randahl yes, but.
But we have to NOT import US cars here in Europe. No way. US "cars" are just legalized polluant killing machines. Keep that shit out.
As @notjustbikes say:

@randahl I'm happy to buy less american items. Many in Europe feels the same

"US to stop collecting tariffs deemed illegal by Supreme Court on Tuesday"
February 22, 2026
Stop playing into their dirty billionaire hands, perpetuating scandals so unfounded prices increase even more.
Were all waiting for our refunds the corporations received as planned by the greedy bastards who do anything they like and get away with it; bailout GWB '08.
Reading between the lines, it's a superpower.
US judge orders refunds for more than $130bn in illegal Trump tariffs
-
@randahl do we have recent numbers on US car imports, and does that include European manufacturers with factories in USA?
My impression there are very few US cars on EU roads.
There's the types that feel driving a Dodge Ram or F150 is Ok, but other than that?(I am very much in favor of some tit-for-tat, but maybe cars isn't the right example)

@tharkonen @randahl aren't those assembled in NL or built in Berlin?

@randahl just stop supplying the USA EUV lithography parts and their high end chip industry is kaboom

@randahl the EU should put tarrifs on it services, like netflix, AWS, google, disney, Microsoft, META, X etc. And it should apply to all companies that has HQ or is incorporated in the US. These money could be used to make European alternatives.

@marjolica @martinvermeer @Inidox @ij @randahl Some EU nations issue blue passports. The passport cover design is entirely up to the issuing nation. (The "we can have blue passports again after Brexit!!!" stuff was bullshit from start to finish.)

@randahl
Sales of US cars in Canada have already dropped to record lows, and we're bringing in Chinese EVs for the first time, but none of this seems to be making an impact on the US executive branch. I'm not sure there's much anyone can do, short of getting on Fox News, that can influence their thinking. -
@DLink Maybe this originates from the "together we are stromger" saying? Dunno... won't happen anyway...
But to spin this even further in regards of shared interests: What about California joining the EU, too?
That would also be nice because then the Tech Bros needs to adhere to the GDPR (well, they need anyway, but...) and other EU regulations...

@randahl It's just a ploy to get out of NATO, (motive not understood) other than a delusional affinity for fellow robber-baron types in Russia.
He's burning bridges with EU and US for a long shot to become, what, an even bigger-time robber-baron?
We can guess how this ends.
