I believe, this will continue until Canada, the UK, and the EU introduces a musketeer oath (one for all), so when Trump hits one of us with tariffs, we all hit back with the exact same tariffs.
If Trump knew, that his 25 percent car tariffs would immediately result in the same tariffs on US car exports to Canada, UK, and EU, he would not even try.
@randahl the EU should put tarrifs on it services, like netflix, AWS, google, disney, Microsoft, META, X etc. And it should apply to all companies that has HQ or is incorporated in the US. These money could be used to make European alternatives.

Am besten gleich Commonwealth + EU, dann kann die Orange gerne mal Zölle erhöhen.
Und Antworten sollte man mit Ausfuhrzöllen auf alles was die Amis so importieren.

I believe it was US President Theodore Roosevelt who said: "America should speak softly, but carry a big stick"...
The big stick, these days, is in the hands of Europe and others, as European countries collectively have $3.1 trillion of US Treasury bonds. Roughly 30% of the total US bonds in circulation.
The "speak softly" part should be to let it know, at the highest levels, that Europe will soon start selling those US bonds, if the current President does not stop his nonsense.

@randahl What worked better was a boycott. It's a demonstration that trade was essential for American companies, and that they cannot exist without the help of other nations.
It might be a coincidence that Florida and Nevada both voted for Trump, but they're also both suffering frok lack of tourism.
American alcohol was also impacted, and it was to a degree where the boycott was called a trade irritant.

@martinvermeer @ij @randahl There are propably quite many such differences in worldview, that makes it a long process to include the USA. But maybe just some of the states?

does it matter?
Americans will soon no longer have the money to buy cars, and if they want to continue buying big inefficient cars without gas consumption limits, they could continue, we are sitting by the river and waiting for their corpses to pass through. -
@randahl I like the idea of a unified Canada, UK, EU,, and Norse trade union, but cluster-B range people like Trump think four-year-old children. He cannot foresee the consequences of his actions to the same degree as mature individuals. His brain says: "if I hit him, I win!" and cannot comprehend the situation where the opponent strikes back.

@randahl Actually the EU has a ready package called the 'anti-coercion instrument' which is asymmetric and more effective as it singles out US vulnerabilities. They are not just tariffs (which also damage the imposing country).
Or, as Doctorow has proposed, re-legalize reverse engineering:
Trump may be the beginning of the end for ‘enshittification’ – this is our chance to make tech good again | Cory Doctorow
The US president is weaponising tech, but his tariffs and Brexit provide a surprising opportunity to gain back digital control of our lives, says science fiction author, activist and journalist Cory Doctorow

@randahl that should be the default response: reply with at least the same tariffs back.
Alternatively, stop the export of steal completely. We need it to build up our army and the US factories will run dry very soon. -

You don't hit back cars' for cars' tariff when Europe doesn't buy US cars for plenty of other reasons (gas guzzlers too big for comfort) anyhow.
You hit back with tariffs where it hurts. Republicans got that lessons almost every legislature period, when they hurt EU economy for no good reason.

@martinvermeer @ij @randahl There are propably quite many such differences in worldview, that makes it a long process to include the USA. But maybe just some of the states?
@Inidox @ij @randahl That would require the US to fall apart. That's pretty big compared to one constitutional amendment.
I think we need to internalize that the EU is not just an economic etc. zone, but a commonwealth of values. The Second Amendment is incompatible with that, given its roots in slavery and slave patrols - and as a side note, the pretextual justification that it allows Americans to stand up to tyrants, has shown itself to be wildly silly in a country that voluntarily elected twice the same would-be tyrant...
Same applies for the clause in the 13th Amendment allowing slavery inside prisons. It must all go before America can be whole, and, if we are holding the cards, we must insist.

@martinvermeer @Inidox @ij @randahl ... And they'll need to abolish the death penalty. And student loans. And medical debt.

@randahl yes, but.
But we have to NOT import US cars here in Europe. No way. US "cars" are just legalized polluant killing machines. Keep that shit out.

"US to stop collecting tariffs deemed illegal by Supreme Court on Tuesday"
February 22, 2026
Stop playing into their dirty billionaire hands, perpetuating scandals so unfounded prices increase even more.
Were all waiting for our refunds the corporations received as planned by the greedy bastards who do anything they like and get away with it; bailout GWB '08.
Reading between the lines, it's a superpower.
US judge orders refunds for more than $130bn in illegal Trump tariffs

@randahl do we have recent numbers on US car imports, and does that include European manufacturers with factories in USA?
My impression there are very few US cars on EU roads.
There's the types that feel driving a Dodge Ram or F150 is Ok, but other than that?(I am very much in favor of some tit-for-tat, but maybe cars isn't the right example)
