What even is the new “learn to code”? Like what could we tell young people they can reliably make careers out of? They can’t all be drug dealers and crypto scammers, that’d be impractical. Morticians? Crime scene cleanup?

@babadookspinoza Seems like a good time to know the basics: grow food, fix houses, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, solar installation, water purification, etc

Engineering still seems to be in demand as well

@babadookspinoza Ah, well, fortunately we are about to develop an urgent need for cannon fodder. A career that can last a lifetime.

@babadookspinoza Functionally, we are telling young people they should become social media influencers. It's not what they're going to hear from their high school guidance counselor, but that's where all the incentives are.

@babadookspinoza plumber or PV engineer. Neither can be done by AI, both are almost impossible to automate.

@fool @babadookspinoza you know, I too thought that electricians would always have reliable work, but it turns out that at least in the city where I live (Portland), hundreds of electricians are unemployed or underemployed. the union quit taking on new apprentices over a year ago, so I gave up on that option. I'm still looking into elderly/disabled caregiving, though it's paid closer to minimum wage than the trades are, which is sad but unsurprising given that our society doesn't value care work generally
