This has me thinking a lot about independence, sovereignty, and separatist movements.Punjabi are a distinct ethnic group in India, much like Palestinians are separate from their neighbors, and Ukrainians are from Russians. 20 million Punjabs probably deserve their independence and sovereignty. Whether you agree with their separation from India or not, you cannot cast it aside and claim it has no merit.Quebecors are culturally distinct from English-speaking Canada as well, and nobody can deny that. But with 1/4 of Canada's population, I feel they are more an integral part of Canadian culture than separate from it.On the other hand, there is nothing which makes Albertans culturally or ethnically distinct from the rest of Canada. Nor do we identify as "cowboys" or "oil riggers", as a tiny minority of Albertans do. We are just Canadians. But looking closer at the Alberta Separatist movement, you will find that there is no actual attempt to define Albertans as a separate identity from Canadians. Instead, the basis of their argument is that Albertans are distinct due to our WEALTH, and supposed "ownership" (which we've actually sold off to US oil corporations) of Canadian natural resources! They have even attempted to "create" a fake Albertan identity, trying to start new "Alberta traditions" like celebrating Alberta Day instead of Labour Day with the rest of Canada. Except that no Albertans outside of the UCP celebrates Alberta Day, and the truth is that Alberta has an INCREDIBLY RICH AND MEANINGFUL LABOUR HISTORY, and it's only getting stronger! In the 2020s we are now on the brink of a labour revolution in Alberta! The Alberta Federation of Labour was formed in 1912. Edmonton and Calgary went on general strike in 1919 in solidarity with Winnipeg. In the '70s, Oil Chemical and Atomic workers within the AFL bridged occupational health and safety concerns with environmental issues of air and water pollution. In 1995 we had the Calgary laundry workers' strike and in 2020 the AUPE healthcare workers' wildcat strike. In 2025 we saw tens of thousands of Albertans in EACH of our sister cities rallying in solidarity with striking teachers, day after day!Yes, Albertans are unique, but not for being cult followers like the UCP says we are. Most Albertans stand up to tyranny, but make no mistake that we identify as Canadians and will never identify with the fake Alberta identity that the UCP is pushing on us. OUR Canada includes people of diverse background. REAL Albertans are not xenophobic white Judeo-Christians who bribe immigrants to come here and work, make them pay taxes, then deny them healthcare and public supports. REAL Albertans do not change our impressionable K-9 school history curriculum to assert our Judeo-Christian heritage and deny our Indigenous roots.REAL Albertans need to take Alberta back, as a force in our Canada to be reckoned with!#abpoli #cdnpoli #labour #Solidarity #union #fascism #racism #separation
