According to an English legend, when the 10th-century saint Dunstan was working as a blacksmith, the Devil asked him to shoe his horse. However, Dunstan instead nailed the shoe to the Devil's hoof. The saint only released him when the Devil swore to never enter a house with a horseshoe nailed to the door.
