I love the detect text feature in Mastodon. I just used it to quickly translate this bit of latin to English. This is an interesting bit of Christian history... this is from a document called “Canons of Hippolytus” dated around 340 ad, and it basically says that Christians should not be soldiers. And if they are, it should only be if they were forced, and even so they should not take another life or the will not be allowed to partake in communion (the mysteries).I'd be curious what you all think of this? Certainly doesn't fit with most Evangelical Christian theological perspectives today. Most Christians would across the spectrum of denominations would probably disagree with this... so are we right today or were we more right back then about how to deal with soldiers/military?XIV. Canon fourteenA Christian shall not become a soldier of his own free will, unless he is compelled by a leader. Let him have a sword, but let him be careful not to become guilty of the crime of shedding blood. If it is discovered that blood has been shed by him, let him abstain from partaking of the mysteries, unless perhaps he will be corrected by a singular conversion of manners with tears and lamentation. Nevertheless, his offering shall not be feigned, but out of the fear of God.#Theology #BiblicalStudies #Christianity #Christian
