In around two weeks I’m migrating from iOS to a postmarketOS phone. Please leave app suggestions, I’m definitely going to need them!
Waydroid is… fine, but not preferred Please avoid android apps unless it’s something that is like confirmed to work well on waydroid, is proprietary or something so has no alternatives or something like that. I’m not launching waydroid to listen to music, to read my e-mails or to use xmpp.
Some examples of what I’m looking for, probably for Plasma Mobile:
- Is there like… LibreOffice Mobile or something? To substitute the iWork suite?
- Apple Music clients
- Something self-hosted to substitute Siri, with ability to set timers and stuff
- A reminders app that can sync with a caldav server
- Is there a port of GadgetBridge for Linux?
- I’ll probably make my own water logging and HealthKit-alternative app/“protocol” if that’s not a thing yet, but less work is less work if that exists
- A XMPP client, preferably with spaces support
- Immich client (preferably with some form of caching for recent photos)
- Bitwarden client
- HomeAssistant client
- E-mail client
- These will probably go on waydroid, but: WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and Signal clients
- Some kind of map app, maybe with live traffic data?
- Some kind of backup wizzard to my NAS, tho I’ll probably just make some rsync scripts
- A better keyboard than Plasma Mobile’s default
And also just anything y’all find useful in your daily life with a postmarketOS daily driver, I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of stuff here.
I know some of those exist for desktop Linux, but I’m obviously looking for stuff made with phones in mind (so like… apps made for gnome should be automatically fine maybe?)
(Also, has anyone managed to get nix’s system-manager to work on postmarketOS? There’s no way I’m configuring all of this by hand every time I need to flash it lmao)
@luana Shattered pixel dungeon, podcasts, tuba, readest. I know you weren't asking for these types but they're the ones I use most! Also firefox obvs

@luana@wetdry.world I use Thunderbird with the mobile configuration for an email client but it doesn’t adapt the calendar part I think. For XMPP I use Dino but it doesn’t support spaces (maybe a web/PWA client like Movim can be fine on your phone?). For maps I use Mepo for now but it doesn’t seem maintained anymore and is slightly unpolished. I haven’t tried any alternative clients for Signal as it requires connecting to a “phone”, which needs to scan a QR-code, but I guess for these things there are alternative clients and bridges. In general I would suggest looking at GNOME and KDE apps and the postmarketOS wiki when you need something.

@luana I used to use (GNOME) Health for health tracking but one day my data was just all gone
️ Stopped using it at that point. It's also effectively unmaintained. -
@richardwonka that doesn’t seem to have a Linux app at all, much less a Linux app for phones
@luana there is a linux app on github, I think (?). It used to be called `qobuz-player` and now redirects you to the new name that I can’t remember right now. Even with a text- and a web-interface

@luana hi! Daily driving Plasma Mobile for a couple months (and pmOS for half a year).
Can't answer all, but here's some:
1. Not that I'm aware of, but libadwaita apps seem to work relatively well, so maybe you can find something there?
4. CalDav syncing seems to work from Nextcloud via the system settings. Not sure about non-NC
5. For what watch? There's RockWork for Pebble watches, which I packaged, but is not mergable as it depends on Qt5. I'm working on-and-off on a GTK replacement1/?

9. There's BitRitter, but I haven't gotten it to log in successfully yet. I use the FF extension otherwise, and manually copy passwords.
10. There's Butler which just wraps a webview, but no widgets or anything AFAIK. Butler fails to log in for me but it might be an issue on my side.
11. I use Geary, which works if you get past the janky UI. There's a mobile-config-thunderbird but it doesn't render any emails for me.2/?

12. Maybe you can bridge them to XMPP or Matrix? For Signal there is a native client called Flare, which is very good, but not 100% for receiving/sending (due to Signal changing their API frequently methinks)13. I currently use Pure Maps for turn-by-turn. It has an online mode, but dunno about traffic. There's GNOME Maps as well but it freezes my phone.
15. There's Unfettered Keyboard, which I used to type all these. I really love it, and am working on adding some missing bits!

@luana Go to Flathub. It has a mobile friendly section. Also, dont be afraid to use PWA apps. They work well.
-
@luana btw try to get the openrc variant first, if theres an option to avoid slopstemd go for it
@hsza as I mentioned I’m getting nix and system-manager on it, so unless the openrc family gets a feature-complete systemd-compatible implementation that’ll unfortunately be a no

for email i've used geary before and it's alright . there's also merkuro mail if you prefer something qt based , but i generally find that gtk apps perform a bit better ( just a rule of thumb , not always true )
dino is probably your best bet for xmpp , it's not perfect but it's what i've found to be the most usable .
there's armcord for discord , for signal there's flare
there's pika backup , which is pretty nice
for the keyboard , you could try stevia instead of plasma-keyboard ? ( or maliit2 maybe ? ) there's also ways to get android keyboard working with atl but i haven't figured that out yet .
for bitwarden , there's not really a good option besides just like the browser extension for firefox .
there is a pinetime compatible app if that's what you mean , but there's not a generic gadgetbridge port , that is very much android specific .
for reminders , there's merkuro calendar if you prefer qt apps ! and for gtk , there's planify ( disclosure , i have not tried this one out personally )
there's not like , any good mobile optimized mobile editor for linux . onlyoffice is sorta the best it gets in this regard and it's still not great .i have not tried nix home-manager yet since my phone isn't really powerful enough for it , but if u get it working i'd love to know lol
hope this helps !

I am the maintainer of BitRitter, can you elaborate (in DM/here/issue) what is happening? I am sure we can work it out.OT: for tasks i use Planify, works good with my nextcloud CalDAV sync.

@luana For Telegram Telegram Desktop works great, and there is a fork of Signal Desktop that makes it mobile friendly, you could use WhatsApp using atl (Android Translation Layer) but that's not perfect yet, also keep in mind battery life is not great unless you use something like mobile-power-saver, i have it packaged here but i didn't have the time to send it to upstream yet (it only works with systemd) https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/panpanpanpan/pmaports/-/tree/mobile-power-saver

@pan someone mentioned an ATL for WhatsApp flatpak in a DM, I’ll try it out! Didn’t know there were already that many apps working with ATL.
Is it possible to get notifications with ATL apps at all?

@luana Yes!, notifications works and it's easy to try it out with https://gitlab.com/julianwi/atl_flatpaks (whatsapp needs some out of tree patches that are not there yet, but it works)
