    Roof Update: I made a hole! (Using my hammer action drill and a lot of patience.)

    Have been wondering about the basic comprehension skills of the workpeople of yore who filled this old fireplace with air bricks then filled all the air holes with concrete…

          @leatherstotheeditor Would’ve worked for the council so that’s a pretty good answer.

              @Janet_52square I knew that I saw too many films! 😂
              I remember when we discovered a hidden part of the attic and the neighbours said: "They used to hide people there. Hopefully they got out in time."

                @NatureMC As I child I slept in a bed across a walled up chimney and the wind would howl in there at night. I used to have nightmares that a dead child fell out the wall and across my bed… terrifying.

                    OMG. Those bricks are supposed to be laid flat, so the holes add more structural stability as the mortar links the bricks together. Rather than doing that, they must have decided to use them on their sides to save bricks . . . but then had to fill the holes. Ridiculous.

                    Are you familiar with the movie DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973)? 🤔 😁 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Be_Afraid_of_the_Dark_(1973_film)

                      @Janet_52square Ugh, just finding out now there is a 2010 remake, which seems horrible, actually. The setting of the 1973 movie is much more disturbing...

                        @Janet_52square And a very fine hole it is! Just the right size to fill with a very miniature room box.... 😉

                          @Janet_52square I hate using the hammer drill. Makes me very nervous.

                          Tbf looks like the sort of thing I’d expect to find in our house.

                            @Janet_52square
                            I am wondering how many levels of 'wrong' are there.
                            I can count six, and probably more if you zoomed out a bit more!

                            I wondered if they were trying to tie in the brick courses with older and larger brick/stone courses, but it looks like they were saving on buying more bricks when sand and cement is cheaper!
