I've noticed an interesting shift lately in the Letters to the Editor I get from people who are convinced an unknown tormentor is tracking their every movement through every device they own and then some. I generally don't engage these readers, who almost universally say hello with an absolute wall of text.

But lately, these pleas have come in the form of someone's AI bot breaking down the alleged tracking in painstaking, bullet point detail. The implication is that well the AI bot forensically analyzed the situation and this is the report it produced. As if the AI couldn't be the cause or at least enabler of this person's all-consuming paranoia.

@briankrebs I've seen a couple of posts along these lines on reddit before a moderator nukes them, which I'm sure feeds the delusion at some level.

@briankrebs Now the black helicopters are flown by AI. Just freaking great.

          🤣🤣🤣

Probably some form of AI psychosis — negative, psychosis-affirming, enabling mania in an iterative feedback loop. Like those weird spiral cults or other weirdness.

@briankrebs if you are being secretly tracked by a powerful group through every device you own, then maybe the worst place you could feed your thoughts about that is into a cloud based LLM that vectorizes and stores all your conversations for easy indexing and retrieval 🤔

@briankrebs The 21st century—hell, any time since the mid-1990s—has been *terrible* for the mental health of paranoid schizophrenics. Suddenly their delusions started to find corroboration from folks who share them! And now LLMs.

@varx @briankrebs that also implies any conversation you're having with someone else isn't being sent to an LLM for processing from their end, also.

@varx @briankrebs well, delusions are quite rarely logical (and often completely unfalsifiable). If the people suffering from them could logic themselves out of the fear and anxiety they are suffering, I'm pretty sure most of them would 😞

@ItsJustZip @briankrebs 😱 sHaDoWBaNnED! people have been talking about their phones monitoring their every word to figure out what they're receptive to being advertised.

personally i need a lot more than anecdotes or worse, synthesis of anecdotes, before i get excited about any theories.

and i say this as someone that works with AI as often as humans so i would expect to be suffering from some trending psychosis, or i should be a megalomaniac prophet/poet-warlord with a church or something 😜
