    Sad story of waste from first Atomic weapons.
    People are dying *today* from the waste.

    Story not known .... or believed anywhere else because of the location: St. Louis.

    Unbelievably egregiously bad handling/management.

    Had a "ring side" view. Thyroid cancer survivor.

        @ckfinite
        I'm not a nuclear scientist.
        Their refinement methods were relatively crude 80 years ago and some of the chemicals in the process were as lethal as Uranium.

        I copied some of the reports here.
        One is fairly detailed. The waste is spread throughout the greater St. Louis area in several sites. It's not some minuscule amount.

            @AG100pct It's almost 10 years old now, but this (long) article is one of my favorite pieces of environmental journalism, and it's about the radioactive waste in Coldwater Creek

              @belehaa
              Thanks for the article. The sheer volume of waste is remarkable. Then they ran out of places to dump it. There are several probably "forever" sites in this area...Weldon Springs, Bridgeton ("Westlake") landfill and along Coldwater creek.
              I have a small collection here:

                I can't tell you how many times in my life I would explain to someone from outside the midwest how Nuclear material was refined in St. Louis (and dumped) only to be met with complete disbelief.
                I think the truth is known now...but not as widely as you would think.
