Europe removes 603 river barriers, setting a record for the fifth year running. Sweden led with 173 removals, while Iceland and North Macedonia joined the movement for the first time. Overall, Europe reconnected more than 3,740 km of rivers last year, but with 1.2 million barriers still fragmenting Europe’s waters, there’s still so much more to be done.
