The JSON-LD Working Group published today a First Public Working Draft of YAML-LD 1.0. [JSON-LD11] is a JSON-based format to serialize Linked Data. In recent years, [YAML] has emerged as a more concise format to represent information that had previously been serialized as [JSON], including API specifications, data schemas, and Linked Data.

@w3c What's the point? YAML is a bit more human readable and writable than JSON, but JSON-LD is not for hand-writing or reading beyond debugging purposes.  And if you wanted to hand write or read JSON-LD in a YAML format, you can trivially convert between the two with something like yq.

And yaml is in no way more concise than JSON. Other than the simplest flat KV maps, every YAML file I've ever seen is larger than the equivalent JSON.
