A privacy respecting, freedom respecting proposal to solve the issue that age verification tries to solve:

    Content class transparency.

A to-be-standardized HTTP header for indicating content classes, like nudity, swearing, violence or sex.

It will be mandatory for service providers to set this header. Client software (like browsers) will evaluate that header and block access based on client-side configuration to be set by parents and schools (in the case of school owned hardware).

No government documents required. No third party provider required. No proprietary software required. No censorship for adults that can't or won't prove their age. Responsibility on parents. It's pretty much perfect.

@LunaDragofelis they already came up with that, and please fuck no. adultist abuse/censorship enabled by client-side controls is still just that, being client-side doesn’t make it ethical

@LunaDragofelis The existence of such technologies (once widely supported, e.g. in Microsoft Internet Explorer) and the lack of arrest warrants for most collaborators and clients of Epstein implies that age verification is not intended to solve any of these issues.

@lukyan Yeah, that's what I suspect. "Think of the children" and "What about terrorists" are the two most favorite excuses for authoritarians in liberal democracies.

@hsza I guess it would be the least evil way of achieving the stated goals of the recently popular age discrimination enforcement policies. But I suspect the true goal is surveillance and censorship for minors and adults alike.
