    RE: https://mastodon.social/@verge/116041069446538092

    Two things:
    1. We are creating a two-tiered internet that will see people willing to give up their IDs having one experience while those who can’t, won’t, or don’t have them missing out on those experiences or being outright excluded from whole areas of the web

    2. Why you would be willing to give up your ID to web services that have such poor security in a time when identity is being weaponized by state actors is beyond me

    @Ashedryden What protections do we have as users? None. I'll willingly go into the dark over this. Eventually I'll have to use pigeons and smoke signals to communicate with the world.

      @Ashedryden This is already the case of being excluded from the web. If you "choose" to hang around only on non-bigtech sites, then you are already excluded. If you have some principles then you are already excluded.

      This is just another straw on the camels back.

      @phantasus @Ashedryden
      I chose to delete my facebook accounts. WhatsApp, Instagram, gone. When a friend planned their birthday party, they had a WhatsApp group where they discussed who would bring what and what everyone would wear.

      Of course I was not in that group. I didn't know there was a desscode. I didn't know everyone would bring salad and stuff like that.
      I was already excluded, because I have principles.

      Friends buy the most recent Ubisoft game, or EA game, or Bethesda game, or Nintendo game, or some other game released by a shady company. I can't. I'm excluded from their talks about their new favorite game, because I have principles.

      Friends send me Tiktok links, or Instagram links, or Facebook links. I can't access them because I don't have accounts there. I'm excluded.

      The majority of people will freely give up their ID to companies with bad cyber security.
      I won't. And I'll be excluded again.

          @Ashedryden It'll be unsustainable too. The tier that requires ID will see a precipitous drop in access and traffic, by design.

          I would speculate that whoever's pushing these rules knows that the majority of people won't give up their IDs to these random services, either through apathy ("I don't have time for this") or because it's a bad idea. Only massive platforms like Youtube will get people to jump through those hoops for access.

          Painting everything the same shade of beige is the point.

            @Ashedryden I live in New York and decided to go without my phone. I was a few feet from my front door when I realized I couldn't get the bike share bike without the app. I signed up to get the keycard. After it arrived, I found it doesn't work on any bike stations.

            I thought about how to navigate the world without a phone number. The only people who do that are either very wealthy, or homeless.

            @AlSweigart @Ashedryden In #uk, the homeless get free phones from charities Crisis / St Mungos. Migrants seeking asylum get the same but from the Home Office.

            In both cases, this isn't so much for their benefit, as much as it is for forced participation in online services and surveillance. The homeless cant leave homelessness without the internet.

            Being homeless isn't an excuse not to have a phone and to be forced to participate in the #digitalid hellscape that's being created for everyone.

              @ninafelwitch @Ashedryden Yeah, that's also the reason why I'm on WhatsApp, only because of family connections or to read some updates from meetup groups.

              But I'm not really present there. And at some point you would be lonely sitting in your flat, without any connection with people anymore.

              I still suffer from that, while I'm not as 100% "pure" or stringent when it comes to my denial of such corporations. At some point you break, at some point you long for connection, if you are basically lonely in your offline life.

              If it would be different, then I would be less pressured to even use these services at all. Do I trust Signal, Discord, Reddit, Telegram? No, not at all.

              First real life connections become more and more impossible as you get older, then only connections in those walled gardens can be found and it's painful.

                @Ashedryden I don’t even have a Discord account but it’s weird where things are going online. The web as I've known it for 20 years is becoming unrecognizable.

                    Yeah...
                    So far I still have Discord. But I might not for much longer.
                    I still have steam to chat with friends who are also on steam. But some only have a playstation or xbox. And none of them are on fedi.
                    It was hard to convince some of my friends to follow me to signal. I don't think I'll be able to convince anyone to switch to IRC, XMPP or forums.
                    Discord is where all my guilds are. It's where all my friends have their little chat groups.

                    Leaving Facebook and Twitter was easy. Leaving Discord will be near impossible if I want to keep any of my contacts.

                      @Ashedryden astute.

                      This really is the start of a a two tiered internet. 🛜 I just wonder - will the majority of folks go for this? In my heart I feel like they will. To appear “normal” will be to completely give up all online anonymity. (As if we had that to begin with)

                      The implications of this will be felt in the short term, and I wonder just how many I.C.E detainments (here in the U.S) this will lead to.

                        @Ashedryden I've felt this.

                        I've been searching for alternative ways to get music only to find albums don't get sold anymore; it's always Spotify.

                        It's a crushing pressure from the industry. FOMO to the max level.

                        I'm stubborn and I can take it, but most people - especially teenagers - don't have what it takes to resist the encroachment of techno feudalism on entertainment.

                        And I even miss hearing my old music.

                                @Ashedryden oh yeah, no. I was literally just thinking about how I've never really gotten the hang of Discord. The signal to noise ratio is just so far off, I just kinda forget it exists.

                                I'll definitely be peacing out on that one.

                                  @Ashedryden

                                  With all that is always happening, at this point I assume state actors are pushing it.

                                    @KanaMauna @Ashedryden "State actor" is a peculiar way of describing the legislative body of a country, but it isn't wrong.

                                      @Ashedryden

                                      I think for a lot of us this is already the case that we just don’t computer the way the majority do: we don’t use the same OS, applications, browsers, chat apps, social networks, search engines, media, or even read the same news.

                                      We interact with corporate silos through sock puppets. Which ID laws will close that loop. And we’ll be forced to decide if we want to keep a prescience on that side of the wall at all.

                                        @Ashedryden if its done right they will be using federation with an identity provider whom people do trust, but I doubt that will happen as identity in itself = $$$ in the marketing world.
