    The GUARD Act would require age-gating for any AI use and restrict access for minors across the board. Congress may act Thursday. Speak out now: https://act.eff.org/action/tell-congress-oppose-the-guard-act

    @eff

    Just like we needed tools for cryptography, we will need tools for getting around these age-gating things.

      @eff um, this is the wrong platform to use "but they'll block AI!" as the CTA, c'mon you should know that

        @eff Banning minors would upset me. I like some of their art, and sometimes they present a POV I wouldn't have thought of, and there's no harm in them being on my team in gaming. Parents should be protecting them, mostly by arming them with the knowledge needed to stay safe. The gov doesn't care, it's just an excuse to censor and spy.

          @eff I can't imagine the techbro oligarchs allowing their minions to pass this. They're having enough trouble trying to sell people on AI as it is. I mean I can imagine it because they're quite capable of placing evil for its own sake above their own business interests, but it would seem to be shooting themselves in the foot to ban both minors and anonymous adults from using any AI.

            @donhawkins @eff I can definitely see silver linings to being pressed to abandon all social media, online shopping and even online news sources, but it's going to be tough to pay bills, manage bank accounts and make doctor's appointments if we can't safely do it online now that they've fired all the human customer service staff and moved everything online.

                @PedestrianError @eff Yeah, I know that is all true … but what if we did? Would banks & doctors become allies in the effort to stop the nonsense? How long might it take? Might be fun to test it 😎 Everyone just pack libraries and parks and say fukital to the “inter-webs”.

                    @eff

                    The GUARD Act is not about protecting minors or anyone else. It's about populating a massive new database and making billions from it. It's about registering every user of every computer, matching them together, and building a new surveillance-and-control industry.

                      @eff it’s a sweeping removal of the freedom of information exchange.

                        @eff I'd say this was a bad thing but anything that potentially reduces AI use can't be all bad.
