    💛WAXING WINTER💛

Around the lunar New Year guests are served 'rōbai' (蝋梅), named after the fragrant 'yellow wax plum' which blooms at this time of year.
As the name suggests, the beehive-yellow blossoms look as if they have been carefully crafted from wax.

Rōbai is one of the 'Four Friends of the Snow' (雪中四友 'Setchū-no-shiyū'), 4 plants (including plum, camellia and narcissus) that flower in the snow.
Known as wintersweet in English, rōbai were introduced to Japan from China in the 17thC.

They are not related to the Japanese plum.

Taizō-in (退蔵院), the oldest of Myōshin-ji’s sub-temples, is on my way to work. I never miss the chance to visit in the snow.

'Yokō-en' (余香苑), the 'Garden of Lingering Fragrance', was created by the famed landscaper Nakane Kinsaku (中根金作 1917-95).

Rōbai can be written with the characters '臘梅' (12th month) or '蠟梅' (wax plum).

'臘' or 'rō' was the name given to the 12th month in the lunar calendar, which now corresponds to February (when wintersweet is in bloom).

Rōbai (蠟梅) may feature the character for 'plum' (梅), but it doesn't belong to the plum family.
The plant's flowers, branches and fragrance so closely resemble the Japanese plum* that it was given the character '梅'.

*In reality 'ume/梅' are more closely related to apricots!🤷‍♂️

We need places where we can go to whenever we need to relax and calm.
