      @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place unpopular opinion of mine: AI is analogous to 3D printing

      3D printing isn’t ‘real’

      There,
      I said it

          @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place just as AI is a synthesis of directions and intentions that have been harvested from the already and the existing, so, 3D printing is just a mere imitation of physical solutions that would otherwise be manufactured properly using real techniques – either mass produced by injection moulding plastic, or one-offs using wood or fabric or construction methods that require skill and time and thought

            @u0421793

            The only problem is, I expect such low quality when I buy stuff that it's not even worse when I have my friend 3d print stuff for me. You would be correct if I could find the thing I want without having it custom designed, but usually I can't find it in higher quality than the thing my friend will 3d print unless I want to shell out mass production start up prices for a thing I need 2 dozen of one time.

              @theeclecticdyslexic@mstdn.social @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place that is indeed the quandary, or pickle, or predicament

                @u0421793 Does this apply to CNC routers, laser cutters, and/or plotters? All more-or-less applications of the same design to automate creation of physical goods

                There’s always been a spectrum between hand-crafted one-offs and mass production. I don’t think ceding that entire space is a win for anyone except the big manufacturers
