    Somebody once asked David Gilmour how he got through the solo for "Comfortably Numb" and whether he always played it live the same way.

    And he said he couldn't. He didn't know how. He just played it as he felt it should be played each time. He couldn't recreate the original solo verbatim if he tried.

    But he mentioned seeing a Youtube video of a 13-year-old girl playing the solo, and he said, "But she could! So you should ask her. She's pretty good."

        @gwynnion i mean, the solo on the studio is album is actually a composite of the best parts of a few different takes. technically not even *he* played that way in the first place. πŸ˜‚

            @gwynnion
            I believe he was asked "do you think the audience wants to hear it the same as the record?" and he said he doesn't think about the audience.

            Also now I want someone to go through 100 performances and run some data! Does he play it differently at the start and end of a tour? In cold climates and hot? Time of day? Has it changed over the years?

              @negative12dollarbill @gwynnion And if he's consistent can we start to refer to him as Deterministic Dave?

                @gwynnion I recall an old interview with Keith Emerson talking about his iconic solo at the end of Lucky Man. He was just experimenting with a new Moog and that was more just messing around, so he wasn't a big fan of what was recorded, but they didn't have another track available to record on and they went with it instead of recording over it. Then the song became a huge hit and he didn't really know how to recreate it for concerts, but someone had transcribed it to a music sheet for Keyboard Magazine and it was from that he learned how to play his own solo. πŸ™‚
