    Social Tooters!

    Do you often speak at professional conferences, trade shows, interest conventions, etc.? I don't, but I'm wondering if I'm in the minority.

    Boost for increased attendance.

      @kbob
      I voted 'If they don't invite me to speak, I don't attend.'.

      I have only done one proper talk, and that was at the first Guild of Makers conference.
      I have also done a couple of radio items.

      Generally, I try to avoid them all if I can.

        @kbob Is there a 'I attend but they don't ask me to speak' ? Two people I know who do speak have agents who set up those speaking engagements.

          @ChuckMcManis I assume most people who present ask to do so; the "If I don't speak..." answer means you stay home if the submission was rejected. Sorry if this was unclear.

          I understand some people get requested; I _hope_ those people are a small minority.

            @kbob So a different take? Like you submit a talk to a professional conference and they don't "accept" it? I mean there are conferences and there are "shows". I think TED or SXSW as "shows" whereas Usenix was a "conference." Things like DesignCon are really professional commercials. I know a couple of conferences that are off the record that would love to hear you speak, but not much 'fame' to be had there if that is what you seek.

              @ChuckMcManis Yeah, I didn't mean to be exclusionary. If it attracts a group of people with something in common, and it has a schedule of talks, it counts. Doesn't matter whether it's academic, commercial, community, or whatever. In person or online, paid or free, tiny or huge, etc.

              I personally don't seek anything except info; see my recent exchange with @linux_mclinuxface if you want to know why I'm asking.

                  @kbob Before COVID, I was between “Often” and “If they don’t invite me…”, option but since then I’m the “Rarely” one.

                    @kbob @ChuckMcManis so, my better half is an academic who is a conference goer. Their conferences are so wildly different than tech conferences. Everyone attending also speaks (at least in her discipline) and a “big” conference is 200 people and they last a week. Small conferences? Six people.

                    And everyone reads papers word for word. So different.

                        @kbob Honestly I haven’t been to a conference since 2019. I almost went to one last year, even had it all paid for but then Trump happened and I decided I did not want to go to the US. Fortunately my boss was on board with that decision.
