In every successive Israeli attack on #Palestinian communities, the pattern has been the same: Israel accuses the #Palestinians of using human shields, international organizations, and human rights groups investigate, and the investigations reveal that the party systematically using human shields is not #Palestine, but rather #Israel.

Indeed, the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem has documented the repeated use by Israel of human shields at least since 1967. Investigations by both Amnesty International and #HumanRights Watch into Israel’s “Operation Cast Lead” attacks in Gaza found evidence that Israel used human shields (including children) but found no evidence that Palestinian groups did so.

Similarly, successive #UN Commissions of Inquiry that investigated the massive #Israeli attacks on #Gaza in 2008-2009 and in 2014 looked into Israel’s claims and found no evidence of Palestinians using human shields. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child found “the continuous use (by Israel) of Palestinian children as human shields” from 2010 to 2013. The UN’s Special Rapporteur on terrorism reported the same finding.

An Israeli soldier disclosed in a Haaretz op-ed that the military's practice of using human shields in Gaza is far more common than acknowledged and that a recent investigation was intended to create the false impression that such incidents are infrequent.

“In #Gaza, human shields are used at least six times a day. If the Military Police want to do their job seriously, they should open at least 2,190 investigations,” the soldier stated.

The soldiers refer to #Palestinians forced to clear homes in this way as “Shawish” or “slaves.”

The use of Palestinian civilians as human shields has been an Israeli army policy during its war on Gaza, according to the testimony of a senior officer in a non-reservist brigade.

"In Gaza, human shields are used by Israeli soldiers at least six times a day,".

According to the article, Israeli soldiers routinely force Palestinian civilians to enter #Gaza homes ahead of military operations to ensure that no explosives or combatants are there.

The Israeli army normally uses dogs for these missions.

The officer added that the lack of dogs was the "unofficial excuse" for the prodecure.

The use of Palestinian human shields has become systematically used, and the individuals used in these procedures are referred to internally as "shawish", the officer said.

"Today, almost every platoon keeps a 'shawish,' and no infantry force enters a house before a 'shawish' clears it," he wrote. "This means there are four 'shawishes' in a company, twelve in a battalion, and at least 36 in a brigade. We operate a sub-army of slaves."

He said that he attended a meeting where a brigade commander presented the use of human shields as a "necessary operational achievement to accomplish the mission".
