@annecavicchi for voice I've moved my group over to a mumble server. For chat we're just using Signal. There is no one-to-one replacement that I am aware of.

@annecavicchi just came across Root. seems good, but also closed source/proprietary if you're worried about that.

@annecavicchi Matrix would be the closest. Those who say IRC are mad, it's incredibly unintuitive if you haven't used it before.

i've been a user of Matrix for a long time and i would steer clear especially if your friend is not too technically savvy and by that i mean tolerant of large quantities of grade-A Computer Bullshit
