For #SilentSunday I give you Jardí del Silenci. This used to be a convent. When the nuns left the neighbors stepped in to save it from being developed into luxury housing and parking. Now it’s an oasis of beauty and biodiversity that is 100% community run. In addition to maintaining the garden, they also host talks, meetings, concerts, school visits, and other events for the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the space is under threat again. This time not by developers but by the parents association of a nearby school. They want to pave half the garden and turn it into a playground, even though (a) the school has a large play space already (b) the children of that school regularly visit the garden (c) it has been managed for the last 12 year by a neighborhood non-profit association whom they did not consult before proposing their plan. Negotiations are ongoing with the city to keep the garden in its current form.
