So this is interesting. Back when Dickscord was doing shitty things before I tried a platform called Revolt. It was a lot like Discord, but totally open source. There were some good and bad points about it. It wasn't anywhere as fully featured as Discord was, and some of the people on there were super cagey and creepy. But the software it's self was a good start towards something better.
That said, development was very slow and it was at that point pretty much a ghost town in comparison to Discord.
Somewhere along about a year ago, I'd seen reports that it renamed it's self to Stoat, and then shortly after died. I tried to log into it just to see if it still worked, and was unable. The login servers were down, it seemed gone.
I was however just made aware that it is still up and running. I don't know if someone else picked up the dead project, or if they were just down for a while for one reason or another, but it does appear to be running again.
So something to consider I guess if you're a Discord user and just don't want to be where Discord is going right now. Stoat is open source, and aiming at being a direct Discord replacement, though they don't seem to be there yet. So for the "It hast to be exactly a 1:1 analog of Discord!" people, you won't be happy. For everyone else though, there might be a little hope.

@xoagray what worries me is at some point the main maintener used genAI linecodes (from Claude).
They realised it was too much of a mess and therefore reverted it, but that gives me the impression Stoat is unserious at best, and sadly FOSS isn't immune to AI hype (looking at you Firefox and Fedora) -
@DeltaWye @kalviter https://stoat.chat There it is again just in case there's something about that link I can't see. But yeah, it works here.

Clearly it didn't work and if they're not doing it anymore that's fine.
Firefox, yeah, it sucks that they're going so hard on "AI", but I think they're also learning their user base doesn't want it. They've made a concession recently that there will be a toggle to disable all "AI" in the browser. So that's a good start.
Fedora, yeah, I don't like that they're going to allow vibe coded contributions. I hope that gets canceled before anything goes too wrong as I do use Fedora. Hopefully with all the backlash they'll shift away from it sooner instead of later.

It is text chat only so I don't see how it's a discord replacement.
There are also open source zoom competitors.
Discord has hit the right blend for gamers but still, corporate.
