A month ago there was a lot of buzz on the Fediverse about a new Mastodon server set up by prominent journalists: #TheForkiverse.
There was a rush of sign-ups: nearly 10,000 users in a couple of weeks. People new to the Fediverse, willing to try it out.
It's been hard to gauge how active it still is... so this morning I re-downloaded @IceCubesApp so I could browse their local timeline.
I've been liking and replying to recent posts. Just doing my little in making them feel seen and welcome

@_elena @IceCubesApp I never really understood how mastodon etc worked or what they were for until the forkiverse happened.
It feels like ive finally found ‘my’ social media.

Nevermind just asking people for help online. So many fedi/masto admins, being enthusiasts, are so generous with their time helping new operators get set up.

@_elena I thought journa.host was the main journalist server - worth looking through the profiles for both!

@_elena I've been trying to do this on Moshidon and while I do believe it can do this, I can't find out how
@bammerlaan ok so:
1) tap the three little dots in the top right
2) select edit timelines
3) click on the plus sign (top right)
4) select + local
5) type whichever server you want to explore
6) go back to the home feed, click on the Home pulldown menu and select the local server you're interested in(admittedly, it's a little complicated, in IceCubes it's more intuitive)

if the use of LLMs makes you angry, it's a bit of a challenge to get past the beginning, but worth it

The advantage of the Fediverse is that even if your server shuts down, you could migrate your account and your followers to a different server. I'm sure there are DOZENS of people on the Fediverse willing to help you out, if it ever came to that.

@MichelPatrice aw yes, amazing! sadly that account doesn't belong to the forkiverse... their homepage lists popular toots from across the fediverse (not just local ones) 🥲
