SoundTouch Cloud Service Ending | What It Means for You | Bose
Bose is ending SoundTouch app and cloud service support in May 2026. Learn how this impacts your product.

Crazy thing is they'd probably get a long-tail effect and sell more of the product after open-sourcing it than they did with the closed ecosystem if they kept making them.

Kudos to Bose for doing this.

@ottaross Right! I swear that happened with LinkSys. The fact that people can run OpenWRT on it gives them access to a whole market that they would not have otherwise.

@paco agree! You can't buy the kind of word-of-mouth promotion that positive community chatter brings. OpenWRT certainly does that.
A bit of a push to ensure the Bose Speaker works with Home Assistant, and it would do well. I see it's selling at a premium over its orig retail price on EBay & other resellers.

@maikel it would be one of the more expensive domains I own, but not the most expensive
-
@paco that's an absurd chart. Here's how you compare to who knows how how many users of an app most people have never heard of that is fitness related. Probably mostly used by fairly athletic people.

@Hicsumus @paco The podcasters include @Casey of Platformer fame, and also @kevin who's the NY Times tech reporter.
So very prominent and respected tech journalists.
They've written a lot about the problems with social media over the years.
So as an experiment, they decided to try setting up their own social network using Mastodon, and encouraged their listeners to join.
So far, around 2000 listeners have signed up.
And I personally hope it works

Thanks for the link! For some reason every time I see that #Forkiverse hashtag I think of this: -
@paco here we are! #forkitup #forkiverse

"Three podcasters whoβve spent years critiquing social media companies try to build their own small alternative social media."
LOL OK, that's *one* incredibly disingenuous way to say "we stood up a Mastodon server." SMH.

@paco It will always be practically inconceivable to me that that's a real experience that real people have
Good luck to him! -

Right: it is a #Mastodon instance. So all #theforkiverse users are part of the #Fediverse with all the benefits and potential that the Fediverse has.
