"The descendant of the king the colonies fought a war to be rid of stood at the rostrum in the United States Capitol on Tuesday afternoon and gave Americans a civics lesson. He was very polite about it. He told a Dickens joke about two Georges, his five-times great-grandfather and the first president, and asked the chamber not to worry, he was not there as part of “some cunning rearguard action.” The legislators laughed. Then he began the actual lesson. He told them the Supreme Court has cited Magna Carta in at least 160 cases since 1789, that the principle from Runnymede in 1215 is the foundation of the doctrine that executive power is subject to checks and balances, and that the people of the United Kingdom had given an acre of that ancient ground to the American people in memory of John F. Kennedy."
