does anybody know of security cameras that DON'T automatically connect to the internet?
ideally I'd really like a camera or two but i absolutely don't want to provide footage to Amazon or any other corporation.
i just want something that'll stream locally, where i tell it to go and that's it.
... i might just need to get some webcams and single board computers and write my own software and call it a day... but i figured it's worth an ask.
@tarajdactyl It has been some days, but the last time I checked simple "ONVIF" compatible cameras usually didn't had any cloud stuff.

@tarajdactyl A lot of the cheap IP cameras on amazon will give you a h.264 RTSP stream without too much work.
Many of them will *try* to phone home for one reason or other, so it's safest to put them on an isolated network with no outbound access, but they will absolutely function fine airgapped.
I just run Zoneminder to display/record from mine.

I bought the Sonoff CAM-PT2 recently. It's simple but well worth the low price. Configure with the app, then stream locally with ONVIF.

@tarajdactyl I use Reolink cameras and they happily work offline, streaming into Frigate for local detection.

@tarajdactyl I know Reolink is all local but they really want to also sell you a DVR/controller box, so I’m not sure how well they work on their own. Not cheap, either.

Pretty soon on my list of things to work on (read: idk maybe sometime this year) is router level log analytics but I haven't seen any evidence of the cameras attempting connecting to anything they shouldn't on the local network from my other monitoring systems/scans.
The NDAA compliant cameras should be even better at not trying to connect to anything but I am not paying out for an Axis camera -

@Foritus@toot.dusepo.co.uk @tarajdactyl@anarres.family tbf having a default ntp isn't really that offensive since most consumer devices can't be expected to advertise an ntp server....

@bytex64 @tarajdactyl yeah you NEED a hub to use a battery powered camera without an app. PoE or wired power, you can talk directly to the camera over LAN

There are plenty!Reolink, Amcrest, Dahua, and Unifi generally all rank high as far as camera quality goes for offline cameras.
You'll need an NVR to capture and store footage. I know a lot of folks that self-host frigate to do this, and some that have a unifi setup use that as their NVR. The backing storage can be a dedicated machine or a general NAS with some space budgeted out for camera use.
With offline networked cameras, it's generally recommended to have them on their own vlan, and also have firewall rules that prevent them from being able to access the internet at all. Personally I prefer wired cameras that are PoE compatible. It's too easy to deauth wireless cams for my comfort, and PoE means I only have to run one cable instead of two.

@tarajdactyl we have Eufy cameras. They keep the video on device by default and you can download events. You can purchase cloud storage but we haven't

I've got unifi cameras streaming to an on-site NVR, and while the videofeeds are accessible from the internet, it very much acts like it's coming from my home when accessed off-site, so no cloud storage.
Some wyze cameras have alternate firmware that swaps them to rtsp instead of streaming to the internet, but I haven't put one under a traffic analyzer to confirm.
