The UK wants to put age verification on VPNs[1][2] I'm looking forward to them going toe to toe with mullvad, or how they plan to ban Tor and I2P and yggdrasil and meshtastic

@ambiguous_yelp well, I think we all know they won’t be able to enforce it.
It’s just posturing.

VPNs that operate in the UK could be required to age verify users signing up from IPs coming from the UK;
This could be bypassed by creating the VPN account through Tor - Mullvad for example has an onion address which leverages the privacy and anonymity of Tor better than simply using it to access a clearweb-site
The state could respond to this with random spot device checks: then the cost could be scaled up and down by increasing or decreasing the frequency of the searches. There alr exists UK legislation that makes it illegal not to surrender access to encrypted drives or devices when subjected to a legal search .

@ambiguous_yelp Yeah - I think from a VPN point of view most providers would just pull out of the UK market than ruin their privacy.

I first learnt about proxies and VPNs because of blocks on school computers.
Wonder how may people will become extremely knowledgeable about privacy tech because of these laws! There are too many ways to enter the Tor network for them to block it fully; what great PR.

If every website had an I2P or Tor version then we wouldnt need VPNs to mask our IP from websites and our browsing habits from network providers.
For that reason and because they increase censorship resistance and they eliminate domain renting costs I generally advocate for preferring to host on I2P, then Tor if that is not possible.
