    Are new weight-loss drugs prompting Shumpterian 'creative destruction' that will have a significant impact on the under-lying logic of consumer-focussed capitalism?

    It seems that these drugs not only suppress appetite for food, they also surpass cravings much more widely.

    As our current form of capitalism is built on the continuing fulfilment of consumer demand for non-necessities will a decline in such demand lead to a shift in economic patterns & organisation?

      @ChrisMayLA6 wow. This thing probably won't have an actual systemic effect, but I like your thinking as a thought experiment.

      There was something to this effect attributed to the late Fidel Castro, where he was lamenting on consumerism and how it is rooted in the goallesness / meaningless goals of the capitalist society. Capitalist in the USA sense.

        I have faith that marketing will adapt. They have a century headstart over these drugs in overwhelming the brain/instincts.

          @ChrisMayLA6 probably not, but they may yet be used to treat addictions. That would bean amazing achievement in itself.

            @TCatInReality

            Ha ha, yes maybe; never underestimate the capacity of capitalism to adapt... but of course it will also be an interesting element of the nature vs nurture argument - can drug induced medico-physical shifts be countered by social pressure (i.e. advertising/marketing)?

              @ChrisMayLA6

              If capitalism can't overcome the drugs, we will see a massive backlash against the drugs.

                @ChrisMayLA6 it's definitely true from personal experience that glp1 moderated my tendency to over consume, food, drink and indeed shopping.

                    @ChrisMayLA6 and possibly a budget effect - from what I've seen of the current monthly costs of the new weight loss drugs, unless you are getting them on the NHS, the cost will far outweigth what you save on food so less money to spend on other, hopefully unnecessary, goods or services.

                      Aha, the 'effective demand' argument at micro level - good point
