OK, so I'm not going to "ask AI" b/c it's not worth the electricity and water to do so, and don't really want to spend any non-useful time Kagi-ing it, so can someone tell me (pls) what this whole “Discord" drama is about?

I cannot believe the # of times it's come up in the Mastodon feed. I don't use Discord at all and usually ignore anything to do with it (I am not a fan of siloed info/“communities”) so have zero context.

@hrbrmstr tl;dr: Discord is widly used by lots of people for lots of reasons (including threat actors, ofc), and has been open to signups. now Discord faces age-gating laws in certain regions, so it's decided to roll out age-checks across the board, globally, requiring that anyone who uses Discord uploads their passport or license scan to prove they're 18+ and can access all of Discord's features.
just one major problem with that: Discord already had a breach of IDs!
Discord says users' government IDs used for age checks stolen by hackers
Thanks to age verification laws, expect more data breaches of users' government-issued passports and driver's licenses.

@hrbrmstr ... I've read something about a pre-selected "teen"-friendly configuration. And if you want to prove you are older than a teen you have to confirm age through face scanning.
Allegedly.

@zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr except the blog is intentionally vague and dishonest.
For example, ANY server focused on LGBTQIA+ is automatically labeled as 'adult only.'
Any server discussing or welcoming LGBTQIA+ is flagged as 'adult only.'These flags cannot be appealed and are permanent. It's pure censorship. Which is laughable as Discord has well known terrorist, CSAM, and spam problems.

@zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr Any chance we can make referring to their 'age inference model' as "Discord Jeff" a thing?
