        @infobeautiful
        Ancient Romans thought only barbarians (i.e the Northern peoples) ate butter.

                @raymaccarthy @johnefrancis @infobeautiful Cultural shock for me was that people keep butter outside a fridge in Canada

                Anyway, I honour my Mediterranean roots and sleep in a tub of olive oil (that’s the secret of longevity)

                  @catzilla @raymaccarthy @infobeautiful I read a while back that the secret to Mediterranean and Japanese longevity differences isn't eating olive oil or lots of fish - its lying about your age for pension purposes and poor government record keeping.

                    @johnefrancis @raymaccarthy @infobeautiful Maybe, but my family is Mediterranean, had really poor diets, living conditions and they all lived ridiculously long. I’m talking 100 year old people who survive the most absurd health conditions doctors swore it would kill them. I really can’t explain what keeps my family alive other than chain smoking and olive oil.

                        @infobeautiful I think this is bullshit. I'm Romanian and we usually cook with sunflower oil. Olive oil is considered a "delicacy" and used mostly in salads, and butter is too expensive for most people to use in cooking.

                          This is either outdated, wrong, or misleading. After the 1980s it should also include margarine.

                              @catzilla @raymaccarthy @infobeautiful how confident were you in their ages? Maybe they were actually 90 instead of 100. Nobody cared that much if the local church in Italy put the year of birth as 1917 vs. 1922 on a baptismal certificate completed years after the fact. Parents lied so they could keep their kids out of school. The govt. didn't care to audit them.

                                        another map:

                                        olive oil and tomatoes are significantly more healthy than butter and potatoes

                                        but of course there's other factors
