#TIL I learned what orange blossoms look like. They are pretty. And also they smell A LOT.
(Look, I never lived in a place where oranges would grow! And I prefer succulents and cactii as house plats.)
Having a few orange trees around, I will say that the blossoms smell strongest in the evening. They are also SUPER popular with the bees (who are very much more interested in the pollen and nectar than they are with you).
Hopefully you get a chance to be around some apricot or cherry trees next. Those are gorgeous when in bloom.

@vicgrinberg as children, we used to pick them, pull out the stamen and lick the nectar like candy.
No seriously, it tastes divine..
Moved to the Pacific Northwest about thirty years ago now - so it has been a while..
@AnhedonicHedonist oh, I knew enough if those things, too, so I'm not surprised - you can skin young grabe shoots or young branches, the center is like sour candy. Also lick nectar from flowers I know the look but not the name of. And tree gum can be like chewing gum or candy depending on whether you wait long enough for it to harden or eat it before the other children find it

@jrconlin those I know very well, but oranges are a different climate and part of the world

@vicgrinberg @lisamelton The first thing I did when I bought a house in California was plant a little orange tree. It was so wonderful twice a year when it bloomed. Heaven.

@vicgrinberg I lived in a "patio apartment" in AZ for several years that had a grapefruit tree in the patio. The smell of the flowers was glorious.

We have self grown lemons.
They are two years old now, but have had no blossoms yet.
Hope they smell as nice as the oranges. -

@vicgrinberg Orange blossoms smell heavenly. One of the better floral smells IMHO.

@vicgrinberg when I was a kid (living nowhere near where oranges grown outdoors), our neighbour had an orange tree as a house plant - it smelled lovely when it was blooming, and she even got little sour oranges from it that she made a lemonade kind of drink from.

@vicgrinberg All citrus smells wonderful when it's in bloom. Definitely recommend at least one if you live in a climate that supports it.

@briankrebs I think I find floral smells a bit too heavy for inside myself (got some hyacinths as a present, had to move them into the garden
), but it's lovely when walking through the streets of a city, which is how we experienced it yesterday! -

Reason why I haven't seen orange blossoms before, at least not consciously.@vicgrinberg Oh, well, then enjoy the season for its fullest! It's one of the best times of year in my garden, and having grown up in a place that was too cold for citrus, I am very lucky to live in one now.
