    @christoff check out #LearnLockpickingWithAlice 😊 I cover a lot of intro stuff pretty quickly, and answer quite a few beginner questions.

      @alice
      But... I thought you'd be automatically disqualified for not throwing the locks into the black void after picking them... 😶🤔

      @baardhaveland I use padded work-surfaces because I cherish my love locks and don't abuse them.

        @alice Heck yes! I'll check it out 🙂

        Sorry, @lisamelton, it's awkward when exposed to a toot via a boost but then replying adds the booster. Awkward because unsure if should be included or not so opt for inclusion since assuming there's already interest. Is there Mastodon expectations or etiquette there for you, I know you boost a good deal (good things).

            I just beat the Guinness world record for speed-picking by 4 seconds!

            Single-pin-picking, 8 differently-keyed, 4-pin, standard¹ padlocks, in 56 seconds.

            And I did it while wearing a fluffy bear suit.

            ¹ the current record holder used laminated Master locks with no security pins, but I didn't want all the comments on my video to be "Master lock sucks" jokes, so I used Brinks instead.

                @bonkers the locks I was just picking have something like 5k key combinations (4 pins, up to maybe 10 possible lengths per pin, minus MACS). I obviously don't have to try 2.5k combinations on average to open one. Adding more pins does make it more complex (in the Tytan's case, 16 pins!), but that doesn't exponentially increase the difficulty, as the trick to picking locks quickly is in cutting the search space down using flaws in the lock design and machining.

                @alice There are also other things to consider… The key is an empty cylinder in which goes the ball bearing in the center of the lock, every quarter turn you have to single-pin-pick it again and it would be difficult to tension…

                At this point, it would be easier to ram the door.

                @bonkers

                    @alice @briankrebs Just out of curiosity, in a competition or record attempt, does it matter whether you're single pin picking or raking, are they separate disciplines? And if so how do they verify? Asking because I for example usually start raking/zipping with a flat hook before bothering to fiddle with individual pins, which works for a huge amount of cheapish locks, so technically I'm raking but not using a rake. I'm not planning to compete or anything, I'm just curious if a jury could tell the difference and disqualify me, or if they even care at all. 🙂

                            @bonkers @alice I know someone who used to alleviate boredom at work in a windowless basement with a big combination lock on the door by opening up the furniture/desk locks (for which no keys were given) using only office supplies, in under a minute.

                            The trick was to unclip one side of a binder clip for the tension wrench and rebend a paper clip into a triangle tip pick, then just rake the pins. Then restore the binder clip and ditch the unbent pick where the security officer won't see it.

                              @bonkers @alice The implication there *not* being to pick locks while on the clock at a cleared job, but to start on less-difficult locks. Like office desks or (standard) handcuffs.

                                @gollyhatch the Guinness record states single-pin-picking. In most of the competitions I've seen, they don't differentiate, but some limit your tools to non-rakes. You could totally still zip with a hook, but if you're submitting video like above, it's fairly obvious if you're not single-pin-picking it.

                                      @alice Congratulations. 🥳 Bonus points for doing it in a bear suit. I would make sure they include that in the record description. 😅

                                        @alice @briankrebs Thanks for clarifying. The only competition I attended (to watch, not participate) was a key impressioning competition of the local lockpicking club, but it was a very small event and felt more like a family BBQ with four or five participants and the grand prize was a pack of stickers or something. Damn, now I really wanna get out my tools and start picking again. 😋

                                        Anyway, good luck in your record attempt! 🤞

                                          @drwho yup. I'm going to try for 9 locks in under a minute.
