Let's say you lived on a big spaceship or station like those in "Star Trek" or "The Expanse" etc. You can't just build a football field or national park or anything, but what feasible stuff would you want to have?

Very open ended prompt here haha, just curious if others have thought about this while watching space stuff. Boost for me please?

eta: uh oh . . . the men who think they're funny have arrived unfortunately

Second the garden!A pool would be sick, as well, especailly if it was an infinity pool in a glass observation pod.
The immersion room from Sunshine seems sad/quaint, but likely very necessary.

@aetataureate an actual small forest area - not holodeck - but *real*. I dont want to risk being stuck inside a computer sim every time I want to rest among trees.

In Vernor Vinge's _A Deepness in the Sky_ the Qeng Ho fleets have a millennia-long tradition of always having public parks on ships, even if the parks have to be teeny tiny and zero-G. People who design them are revered, because it takes huge arts and sciences ability to do this.
I love this concept.

@Myotis_cuniculus @aetataureate yeah, trees. Even a grove of BIG trees.
Living in a fully artificial environment could warp the human mind, make you feel like everything is fungible. Big trees are an anchor to reality. Something real. An other that feels dependable. Peaceful.

You probably can't have pets running rampant in a ship or habitat, so something like a pet cafe could be nice.

and then upgrade to treeships

Maybe not so much in Star Trek or Orville type universes, but generally, everywhere in space you have to be so careful all the time not to get injured or break some equipment or whatever.
People need a place and time to roughouse, get all rowdy and not be careful. So some kind of sports capsule or wrestling arena or playground...? Bouncy castle? Bumper cars?
I used to have a much more creative imagination. Having trouble thinking up more examples of this theme.

@aetataureate Outdoor roller coaster with sealed and unsealed pods. An arcade mode with an on-rails arcade shooter.

@springdiesel this is such a good one!!! they're also so whimsical about just refashioning atoms into entire new things hahaha and i think that's one of the least feasible things.
i think this topic benefits from thinking about it on a low level over a longer time, so it seems like you're doing great tbh.

Were you envisioning a "walking" garden or a more food/agricultural one, or something else?My mind went to walking garden, but no reason it can grow some food to pick as well, right?

The starship Enterprise appears to have had a bowling alley below the shuttle bay, but it never appeared in the show. I suspect maybe it was haunted.

What I was really imagining was something like a botanical garden, with different walking and sitting areas, different environments. But then I thought that was asking too much. In a theoretical thought exercise! Asking too much! My brain is weird, always thinking of constraints instead of more possibilities. -

@aetataureate Becky Chambers has a series of novels that detail space colonies with parks and wooded areas as well as recycling graveyards where bodies are interred in a reverent manner and composted to return them to the colony in the form of fertilizer.
