There are some great servers on Mastodon with great people - and there are some that are pretty toxic, exclusionary, and "reddit-like". I'm very happy I run my own . I think it's a product of servers getting too big.

@SecretAntelope Since it's private people running the instances and they're not in any monetary pressure to overlook things that might even slightly irk them, it's only expected that some people will turn into little fascists over time.

There's also the current era problem with echo chambers, where a sanctuary is created for something that doesn't get universal love out in the public, but it slowly deteriorates into toxic nest of hate from which the moderate and level headed members of the group eventually check out and only the batshit craziest are left behind.

I've seen this even with the hobby as harmless as pinball. Our local forum had a slight disagreement between certain groups, which led into some people starting their own forum with blackjack and hookers. But since that splinter group really had nothing to discuss any more, the discussion there turned into just hating everyone outside their tiny niche of already niche hobby with most of the posts being something like "Those people think their games are good but we know better because ours are the only real pinball" with all the replies being just continuation of the circle jerk.
