Senator Senior’s amendment to Bill C-12 passed - a nice surprise. I had less luck with the amendment I proposed tonight, to try to put some meaningful parliamentary oversight on the mass cancellations of visa and permanent residency cards. @Paulatics As someone who has been a permanent resident in Canada after fleeing transphobia in the States for about a month and a half now, who is just waiting for IRCC to mail the card, C-12 scares the hell out of me. It single-handedly feels like it'll put me and hundreds, likely thousands of Americans hoping to soon call themselves Canadians in a fire after fleeing the frying pan. And I live in what seems to be one of the more accepting parts of Canada. I cannot imagine how your constituents in the same boat feel right now.
I left America because the constant fear and dread of what will come for me next made it impossible for me to plan long term. "How do you apply for university or sign a mortgage for a house when you could lose the right to exist in public tomorrow" are exact words I heard from someone in a similar position to me when I left. If C-12 passes, I fear I will be asking myself the same questions as a permanent resident in Canada.
