    How do you change the default font for LibreOffice spreadsheet app Calc?

    This question illustrates how ux and ui design still has a way to go in major open source projects that seek to compete with popular proprietary software.

    1. The method is not where you'd expect it.

    2. It doesn't change the default for Calc, only for that file.

    3. Normal users shouldn't have to mess with "templates" and give them "specific names".

    4. If the above is wrong, that adds weight to the fact that a fairly tech confident person couldn't find the correct answer.

    If I was a billionaire, I'd set up a Foundation to sponsor work on open source UX and UI design.

    #opensource #ux #ui #libreoffice #design

      funny thing is - a lot of proprietary software that open source seeks to compete with out out-do, has poor ux/ui

      so fixing it in #opensource would be an easy win

        @rzeta0 My personal interactions with the LibreOffice project have been relatively negative. Although I do use it daily, I no longer contribute. I certainly do not consider LibreOffice to be reliable in any sense, nor is the project responsive to the community. When I work on something critical, I fire up Windows 10 LTSC in VirtualBox and use Office 2019 or 2021.

          @skewray

          I understand. I've been using LibreOffice (and OO before that) for years but I kept a copt of Microsoft Office around for "business tasks" where messing up formatting would have real costs.

          A few weeks ago I finally got rid of MS Office.

          I hope I don't regret it.

            @rzeta0 Are we assuming that all users share the same expectations for where to find advanced settings like a default font?

              @hannaB

              an excellent question.

              user-testing with beginners, non-technical users will be valuable

              and that is precisely what i'm saying is missing in too many important open source projects

              also - there is an assumption that changing the default font is an "advanced setting" - that too needs user research

                @rzeta0 You're right that labeling it "advanced" without research is part of the problem. More intuitive defaults and guided discovery would help a lot.
