Q5: You have won the Lottery BIG TIME! How does this affect your making? Do you start a business, or stop the one you have? Do you invest in some super-expensive piece of dream making kit? Something else? #MakersHour

I won't have to work, and I'll be doing my making in our dream smallholding in Wales. The only thing to interfere with making would be looking after the chickens and the veg garden and the pigs and the inevitable donkey and goats we'd end up adopting...

@MakersHour oh dear, I am not proud of this, but I give up work, buy a house with lots of space and disappear into my crafting/ sewing room for long periods of time!

@MakersHour A5 #MakersHour ok so this new illness has scuppered me on many fronts and so I don't have much chance now but to get myself organised and try and use my creative ideas to do something with alongside the stuff I believe I will be well enough to continue.
In terms of expensive piece of kit. It's not a making thing but a mobility one I used to be the very happy owner of an Anthrotec recumbent trike. I sold it when the children got too big and it was a less important thing... 1 regret. So now I'm thinking about finding an affordable used alternative ...
It would feed back into my creativity because it would return the independence I'd only just got back a few months ago when I got my license back after a 6 and a half years of a medical block

@MakersHour #makershour A5: First off, I get my investments set up so @Canageek and I never need day jobs again. Then we retire to Vancouver Island and I reopen that yarn shop I loved in Comox. Anything left over, I put into supporting queer writers and artists.

@MakersHour A5 Stop working for other people I guess and just do more making and publishing, just because. I'd like to make a proper "someone could buy it" version of my DIY educational synth, so I guess that would be quite high on the list.

And I'd almost certainly pay over the odds for some piece of retro computer or synth kit I've always wanted that is now pretty ridiculously overpriced these days 🙂

              @MakersHour

              Q5

Space. I’d get space. Space so I could work on projects and not have to scape them aside to do something else. Space for decent tools. And I’d be able to make for enjoyment not always to have to sell. Or hope to sell.

@MakersHour I would first get some of the very fancy merchant& mills linen, and then I will go absolutely ham on all the fancy thread and yarn: every colour embroidery thread, linen hand sewing thread, linen embroidery thread, cotton variegated yarn, sashiko thread in different colours, the expensive organic cotton sewing thread, fresh shirring elastic, silk yarn, and whatever other fancy stuff I come across. Everything twice: one to use and one to hoard.

A5 With a sufficiently large lottery win, I'd buy my own workshop, and equip it. Somewhere within a short walk of where I live, unlike my current 1 hour travel to get to the workshop. Oh an possibly hire someone to clean it for me...

A5: I’d just have a nice workshop or two fully kitted out for me to potter around in. Not interested in making for money. It’s my hobby and my sanctuary.

@quixoticgeek @MakersHour Clean it, and keep all the tools serviced and sharp, and restock materials...

In fact, being the caretaker for some eccentric's workshop would be a pretty sweet gig...

@diyelectromusic @MakersHour I know it's not the same at all, but several years ago I bought the Arturia V collection. It's a softsynth emulation of about 30 famous synths. It kind of convinced me that most of those old synths, while revolutionary in their time, aren't that great by modern standards. We're living in the golden age.

I'd quit work and just tinker full time. Buy a place to tinker at. Two places... not anything extravagant or fancy, probably somewhat rural and spacious though. One in Australia and one here in the UK (tho southern Europe would be tempting). I'd split my year between them. Endless summer baby! (I'd still visit cold places, especially for snow, but just for holiday trips.)

It would be cool to tinker in a productive way that solves problems for people, and even pay/hire other tinkerers. Sort of make a charitable tinkerers trust... found a society of fixers.

(Yeah, well aware of environmental issues with the flying. This is just daydreamspeke, I don't gamble, so will never be in it to win it,per se.)

@kbob @MakersHour All very true. We can do almost anything with a modern computer.

But sometimes being able to do anything can just mean ending up doing nothing, so sometimes we need proper knobs, wires and buttons as prompts.

But I already have synths I'm not actually playing, so I guess it's all a bit of a moot point...

So maybe the real answer is simply space with them wired in ready to go so I can just play for a bit with no setup time needed.

@MakersHour #makershour A5: First off, I get my investments set up so @Canageek and I never need day jobs again. Then we retire to Vancouver Island and I reopen that yarn shop I loved in Comox. Anything left over, I put into supporting queer writers and artists.

@WizardOfDocs @MakersHour GLASS LATHE. They cost about $40K Canadian as there are only a handful made each year as they last so long: I used a couple from the 1960s while I was at SFU and they were a delight to work on.
