@catsalad they only exist for you. there were teams of technicians running ahead of you and swapping out any paper towel dispensers for the cloth wrap-around units, and returning the bathrooms to their previous configurations afterwards.

@catsalad well i learned not so long ago, that the towel does not loop around. It just goes one way and has to be replaced after the whole roll has been used.

@catsalad you've made me realise where my habit of drying my hands on my shirt came from.

@catsalad I remember them on some trains in my childhood. They had the advantage that even today most hand driers on trains achieve nothing beyond encouraging you to hold your hands out for long enough that the water evaporates naturally.

@catsalad nope. they did indeedee. they were all over Europe up until last time i was there in the aughts; which is why, weirdly, you’d find them in old Spanish or Italian restaurants here in nyc. it’s why i always keep a hand towel in my hand bag.

@grumpy_copi @catsalad I can confirm this also. I have changed a few of them. They were not as nasty as one thinks. Still nasty — oh yes! — but not as nasty.

@catsalad They still exist. Saw one a couple weeks ago. Decided to walk into below freezing temperatures with damp hands, instead.

@catsalad Oh yes. Especially in the Netherlands. Pull down a fresh clean bit of towel ? Oh no, you snatched at it. Take a time penalty.

They were real! I discovered one in a bar maybe 20 years ago. At the time I wondered whether it was better or worse to wash my hands.
