17 reply guys on the fedi (plus, tbf, a couple each on bsky and LI): This is what you should have written!

Seriously though I do appreciate those who responded with excitement about what I wrote + others who engaged with the content, at least.

@emilymbender it’s unfortunate you have to deal with that. Some people might see it as “boosting engagement” or something 🫠

It takes some serious balls to dare to reply to this ⬆️ post with a criticism of the overgeneralizing pejorative concept of "reply guy". 😬

But honestly, isn't this the basic idea of social media? You put thoughts into the public and people give you feedback, especially those who disagree. We will likely be able to observe this mechanism in the answers to this post... 😉

@benedikt_lauenburg that is beside the point about people behaving poorly.

@cark The inability to distinguish between discussion/feedback and mansplaining makes it ... less surprising to me that you're bragging about the size of your own balls.

@emilymbender Sure. It is also funny that people criticize you for giving several definition based on actual usage.

I mean, you mention you are a linguist right in your profile, so why would you have a comp.sci. approach?

Although I must admit that McLuhan axiom "The medium is the message" still applies. The fediverse apps often provide little to no context and lead you outside your bubble.

                  > bragging about the size of your own balls

Unfortunately, social media users seemingly still fail to convey irony. 😐

Anyway, I am really interested in what objective criteria distinguishes valid critical feedback from mansplaining?

I think there are obvious cases. OK. But the interesting cases are the non-obvious ones. As always, the question where to draw the line. And we should not forget that any discourse-pattern which is not based on quality of arguments but properties of the speaker (such as gender) can be utilized also for the "bad side".

I totally get that it is annoying to get tons of dumb comments and I am not surprised that they mostly come from men. Nevertheless, I think "reply guy" and "mansplaining" are problematic concepts in serious debates.
