I guess the argument here is that permanent standard time is better. The BC change was announced so quickly, I don’t know why they went with DST.

@giflian It's a trade off between getting noon accurate and getting extra daylight in the winter.
Permanent standard time has a more accurate noon, which there's some evidence is better for natural sleep.
But also this is Canada, so we can't really afford to give up an hour of extra daylight in the winter.

@giflian I was a little surprised there wasn't a longer warning... A lot of software needs adjustment for sure.

@giflian I’m of the “I don’t care, just stop moving time all over the place” philosophy.
The thing that makes me question this argument that “you’re doing it wrong,” is what would these Sam people say about the health benefit of moving house west to BC from Alberta versus the opposite direction? Would we hear the same argument, or not?

@marco well, in this case there's no change to how things are done until November, and we sprung forward last weekend as per usual.
I think the idea had been that BC was waiting for WA/OR/CA to change first, and then just went and did it themselves. Maybe the permanent DST had already been agreed to.5

@giflian Basically there's a medical disadvantage to teenagers waking up before dawn more often.
But I don't think the people who are really worried about that really considered the other side, which is the consequences of teenagers needing to spend effectively 100% of sunlight hours in school.

@giflian #Ontario is also on board with a move to permanent Daylight Savings Time, but only after Quebec and New York State do the same.
There is some symmetry to standard time as the sun is at its apex about noon (not exactly except in the middle of the 15-degree time zone, adjusted for political boundaries of course). However, people like those long daylight evenings so most seem to prefer DST year round. Alternatively, we could shift our workday to 8-to-4 instead of 9-to-5 I suppose.
