@jerry I feel this. Every time I check out Lemmy these days, there is a bunch of weird political rage bait junk getting dumped into popular memes pages, and every time it seems to be getting just a little more subtle and sneaky.

Unless you're making liberal use of filters, it would he hard not to get pushed to one extreme or the other.

@abmurrow yeah for sure, the threadiverse is becoming concentrated propaganda lately. I found it’s better after having blocked a few specific instances though.

The fact that the developers of one of the main engines of the Threadiverse are already politically biased, and thus their flagship instances are as well, does not help things much either.

@jerry It sucks to have to deal with this just to offer a service to people. That is why I just run my own. But I appreciate the relay that @jerry offers to us single hosters.

At some point I may not need the relay but no one has actually told me when that is lol.

@jerry I realize this wouldn't work for everybody, but the number of bots trying to sign up to CoSocial.ca is zero, because we require that members pay $50 a year to run the service.

@idlebrain one of the biggest challenges I’ve run into is defining where the line is between propaganda, and someone’s heartfelt genuine belief. Particularly if you consider that generally people who have a particular view will consider opposing views this propaganda.

@jerry @idlebrain It's propaganda if they are being dishonest and wilfully spreading misinformation.

It's possible to have genuinely differing beliefs as long as we can agree on basic facts. Unfortunately the current media landscape, combined with chatbots, has made many people completely detached from reality.

@jairajdevadiga @jerry @idlebrain we can't see into their minds though; what if they honestly believe that 5G causes cancer and have scientific studies to prove it? Part of the modern disinformation goal is to muddy all forms of reality.

They rapidly change their tactics re: usernames and especially the descriptions. Seems the shift gears weekly.

The one thing that's always constant are the random email domains with common links behind them.

They're pretty easy to spot, but only because I'm hyper aware of them.

@benroyce @wilbr @jairajdevadiga @idlebrain I argue that propaganda doesn’t have to be a lie to be propaganda. I am reminded of my time in China - the news there only covered accomplishments and successes in China and only covered problems and failures from western countries. None of it was a lie. But it was definitely propaganda. That is what we are seeing a lot of here. Plus, it’s often challenging to determine what is true or not without an army of fact checkers at our disposal.

The amount of propaganda bots trying to sign up lately is bonkers. The fediverse feels like it’s becoming a battleground for information warfare. Be safe out there
